On successful completion of the SRTC curriculum, SRTC trainees will be able to:

For module 1. The Skin in Health

  1. Articulate the process of skin embryogenesis.
  2. Describe the basic biological structure and function of the skin.
  3. Explain the structure and function of skin appendages.
  4. Explain the structure and function of the skin immune system.
  5. Articulate theories of skin health involvement in systemic health.

For module 2. The Skin in Disease

  1. Define common inflammatory skin disorders and their treatment.
  2. Describe common skin infections and their treatment.
  3. Describe common skin neoplasias and their treatment.
  4. Articulate the role of genetics in skin biology and disorders.
  5. Articulate the distinction between genetic and environmental disorders.
  6. Identify the major environmental factors which impact skin disease and care.

For module 3. Basic Skin Research Methods

  1. Correctly set up and use a microscope.
  2. Conduct common histochemical staining procedures on skin tissues.
  3. Articulate the use of genomics and proteomics in skin research.
  4. Conduct simple immunologic techniques in skin research.
  5. Culture cells derived from the skin.
  6. Articulate the need and use of animal models.
  7. Characterize and emulate Good Laboratory Practice.

For module 4. Clinical Skin Research Methods

  1. Articulate clinical trials phases I to IV.
  2. Describe the essential pharmacology of the skin.
  3. Compile a time sequence of drug and device development steps.
  4. Characterize and emulate Good Clinical Practice.

For module 5. Skin Research and Society

  1. Implement ethics and regulatory issues in developing a research protocol.
  2. Write and submit an intellectual property (patent) application.
  3. Debate and defend a cause, idea, or policy related to skin disease.
  4. Develop a skin disease prevention strategy for public dissemination.
  5. Address cultural and gender specific issues in the development of disease prevention and treatment strategies.
  6. Articulate the psychosocial and economic impacts of skin health and disease.

For module 6. Bioinformatics & Epidemiology

  1. Describe the epidemiology of common skin disorders and their impact on Canadian society.
  2. Articulate and utilize bioinformatics in a skin research protocol.
  3. Articulate and utilize biostatistics design in a skin research protocol.
  4. Articulate hypotheses and approaches to test hypotheses in a skin research protocol.
