The CIHR-SRTC’s curriculum is individually tailored according to the level and specific goals of each trainee while ensuring that he/she achieves a working familiarity with all dimensions of skin research. The overall aim is for trainees to develop both focused research expertise as well as the skills needed to effectively interact with basic and clinical skin investigators across the full translational spectrum.
Because formal undergraduate teaching in skin biology, physiology, and biochemistry is virtually non-existent in most universities, one key challenge is to ensure a uniform basic platform of skin research knowledge for all CIHR-SRTC graduates. The SRTC scholar curriculum is therefore structured around two key components:
Completing a core skin research foundation course that is compulsory for all trainees, and
Building a customized advanced skin research portfolio in a specific aspect of skin research for each trainee.
Each trainee attends a lecture series that examines all aspects of skin research including lectures on;
Biology and function of skin
Principles of skin disease
Skin disease epidemiology
Specific diseases and their clinical treatments
Disease diagnostic approaches and instruments
Research methodology
Research knowledge translation
Principles and ethics of skin research
Each trainee is mentored and evaluated for their progress in training at regular intervals throughout their SRTC scholarship. This involves the scholar's immediate training supervisor, an independent mentor, and the SRTC board of directors.
