Greetings from the skin research training
centre director - Dr Harvey Lui.
The Skin Research Training Centre at
the Vancouver General Hospital Department
of Dermatology provides a comprehensive
training centre for clinical fellows
and trainee scientists in Canada. It
is an integral, major component of the
University of British Columbia School
of Medicine and supports the institution’s
larger research and educational mission.
The SRTC program launched in 2007 with
$1.8 million of financial support from
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR) and the Institute of Musculoskeletal
Health and Arthritis (IMHA). Its mission
is to significantly expand basic and
clinical research in dermatology and
to train new recruits in skin research.
Since early 2008, the SRTC has recruited
clinical and research trainees to the
centre to develop their research skills
and to expand our knowledge of skin health
in Canada.
The SRTC trains the best in clinical
and research dermatology. We have designed
a comprehensive curriculum that is constantly
enhanced with SRTC student and faculty
feedback. Weekly didactic sessions are
held and the many and varied aspects
of skin research from basic skin biology,
through clinical lectures on specific
diseases, to training in knowledge translation.
SRTC trainees attend journal clubs and
present their research work on a regular
basis in the Department as well as at
national and international conferences.
The SRTC provides workshop sessions on
professional skills development and tailors
unique research curricula for trainees.
The SRTC is committed to delivering
an improved skin research capacity to
Canada and to significantly improving
the health and welfare of Canadian Citizens.
